Run for the Roses: Food and Tradition of the Kentucky Derby

The Kentucky Derby isn’t just a horse race—it’s a Southern spectacle of pageantry, tradition, and indulgence. Held every first Saturday in May at Churchill Downs in Louisville, the Derby is a cultural event that brings together the best of Southern hospitality: bold fashion, lively company, and most importantly, unforgettable food and drink.

We love any excuse to bring people together over great flavors—and the Kentucky Derby gives us plenty of inspiration.

Mint Juleps: The Iconic Sip
No Derby celebration is complete without a classic Mint Julep in hand. Traditionally made with Kentucky bourbon, fresh mint, sugar, and crushed ice, it’s a refreshing symbol of the South. Each year, nearly 120,000 Mint Juleps are served at Churchill Downs during Derby weekend alone!

We’re shaking up our own version just for the occasion—perfectly chilled and loaded with Southern charm.

Southern Bites with Tradition
The Derby is a feast of rich, comforting classics. Here are a few favorites that often grace Derby Day tables:

  • Benedictine Spread: A cool cucumber and cream cheese dip, ideal for tea sandwiches or crackers.

  • Pimento Cheese: Sometimes called the “caviar of the South,” this creamy, spicy spread is a staple at Derby parties.

  • Hot Browns: An open-faced turkey sandwich with bacon and Mornay sauce, this Louisville-born dish is pure indulgence.

  • Derby Pie: Chocolate, walnuts, and bourbon baked into a gooey pie—it’s everything a Southern dessert should be.

We’ll be featuring some of these Kentucky classics alongside our coastal favorites, bringing the best of both worlds to your table.
